Karate
空手 (Empty Hand)

Shorin-ryu karate is celebrated for its natural stances, fluid movements, and powerful strikes. Rooted in ancient Chinese gung fu and native Okinawan fighting arts, it has evolved into a refined system of self-defense and personal development.
Unlike many modern martial arts, Shorin-ryu emphasizes the training of the entire person—body, minid, and spirit. Our approach is holistic, encompassing physical conditioning, mental discipline, and character development.
Tyler Kenshin Kan specializes in Matsumura Seito, a lineage directly tracing back to Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura, the founder of all Shorin-ryu and bodyguard to the Okinawan king. This authentic style offers a profound understanding of karate's rich history and philosophy.
By training in Shorin-ryu, you'll develop not only physical skills but also the mental fortitude and discipline essential for success in all areas of life.

Kata

After the basics are taught a student must learn how to put the techniques together in combinations called kata. Meant to teach a number of deeper principles, kata combine different blocking, kicking and punching techniques in a fluid like manner, in different directions and skill levels. We utilize these techniques as a continual part of our training, with each new rank learning progressively more complex kata.

Traditional karate training is generally broken into three main categories; Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring).

Kihon

In order to build a strong foundation, karate training begins with the basics. With that in mind, and to ensure a good understanding is cemented into all aspects of your karate, nearly every class will begin with several repetitions of these basic techniques.

Ippon kumite

Once a student has a fair knowledge of the basics, and knows how to put combinations together through kata, the student then learns the one step sparring techniques (ippon kumite). These drills utilize one student attacking with a specified attack while one student defends, and allows the student to feel and see how effective or ineffective their block and counter techniques are, as well as learn to work on distance and timing.

Judo / Ju-jitsu (Gentle Way) - Classes currently suspended

Meaning "gentle way", Judo is a modern combat sport based on a synthesis of various classic ju-jitsu techniques and more modern interpretations created by Judo's founder Dr. Kano Jigoro.  With it's emphasis on the competitive element, where the object is to either throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force and opponent to submit by joint locking or executing a strangle hold or choke.
The philosophy and subsequent pedagogy, developed for judo by Dr. Kano,  became the model for other modern Japanese martial arts that developed from traditional schools.  Even karate takes both it's uniform and ranking system from those developed by Dr. Kano. The worldwide spread of judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Russian Sambo, and Brazilian ju-jitsu.
